Harvard University survey report:Chinese people’s satisfaction with the central government is as high as 93.1%
[Global Network Report]”According to the latest international survey results of Harvard University, Chinese people’s satisfaction with the Chinese Communist Party exceeds 90%.”On July 12, a spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Hua Chunying issued a strong push to counter US Secretary of State Pompeo’s defamation of the Chinese Communist Party, and It cited a recent survey report from Harvard University as a proof.
This report is the”Understanding the Resilience of the Communist Party of China:A Long-term Survey of Chinese Public Opinion” published by the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government (Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation) in July 2020.”.
This 18-page report was written by three experts at Kennedy College, who conducted eight surveys in China from 2003 to 2016 and conducted face-to-face interviews with more than 31,000 Chinese urban and rural residents In order to track the satisfaction of Chinese citizens at various levels of the Chinese government at different times, and then wrote this survey report.
The report concludes that since 2003, Chinese people’s satisfaction with the government has increased almost comprehensively, especially in inland and poor areas.
The survey report shows that from 2003 to 2016, the satisfaction of the Chinese people with the four levels of government of the central government, provinces (municipalities), cities, counties, and townships has increased. In 2016, the satisfaction of the Chinese people with the central government was as high as 93.1%, and the satisfaction of the other three-level governments exceeded 70%. The satisfaction of the four-level governments of provinces (municipalities), cities, counties, and towns were 81.7%and 73.9%, respectively. And 70.2%. Generally speaking, the higher the government level, the higher the public satisfaction. In addition, from the perspective of satisfaction improvement, the township government’s people’s satisfaction improvement is the most obvious, from 43.6%in 2003 to 70.2%.
Not only that, Chinese people’s impressions of local government officials have also undergone many positive changes. More and more people believe that local government officials are”friendly and knowledgeable” and”care about ordinary people’s difficulties”. The survey report shows that in 2003, only 39.1%of the people surveyed said that local government officials were”friendly”, but this number rose to 74.3%in 2016. In addition, 75.7%of the interviewees thought that local government officials were “erudite”. In addition, fewer people think that they”speak only but not officials”,”prefer to the interests of the rich” and”only care about their own interests.”
The report also focused on how the Chinese people evaluate the government’s performance in the three key areas of public service, anti-corruption, and environmental protection. In terms of public services, most of the interviewees believe that the government is working hard to improve their material well-being. Especially worthy of recognition is the efforts of the Chinese government to provide security for vulnerable groups. The report points out that from 2006 to 2011, the coverage of medical insurance for all respondents doubled, from 43%to 95%. Among them, the proportion of rural residents participating in basic medical insurance increased from 32%to 82.8%, and the basic pension coverage also increased from 36.8%in 2005 to 71.3%in 2011.
Overall, the poorer residents among the respondents believe that the government’s efforts in providing basic medical care, social welfare and other public services have become more effective. Despite problems such as large income gaps, most people think things are moving in a positive direction and praise the Chinese government for improving its material welfare.
In terms of fighting corruption and advocating clean government, the report stated that corruption has always been regarded by the Chinese people as one of the most serious problems facing them. Statistics show that Chinese citizens generally support the anti-corruption movement. In 2016, 71.5%of the respondents indicated that they recognized the government’s efforts to fight corruption. According to the report, most interviewees believe that the government’s efforts to control corruption are paying off and things are moving in the right direction.
In addition, in terms of environmental protection, in June 2016, the Chinese people interviewed indicated that the environmental issues they were most worried about were “air pollution”, followed by “food safety” and “climate change”. However, people are still optimistic about the governance of environmental issues, and 43%expect that the local air quality will become better.
At the end of the report, the researchers pointed out that by 2016, the Chinese government is more popular than at any time in the past 20 years. On average, the health care, social welfare and other basic public services provided by the Chinese government are much better and fairer than when the survey began in 2003. In addition, with regard to corruption, the decline in satisfaction from 2009 to 2011 was completely reversed. The public seems to generally support the anti-corruption movement. Regarding environmental issues, even though many residents expressed dissatisfaction, most respondents expected that the situation would improve in the next few years.
As Hua Chunying said at a regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,”The report concludes that the ruling foundation of the Communist Party of China is solid and the resilience stems from the broad support of the people. According to this survey report, The satisfaction rate of the Chinese people with the Chinese government is higher than at any time in the past few decades. It is generally believed that the Chinese government’s ruling capacity and efficiency are more than ever before. In fact, the Chinese people are more than 93%satisfied with the central government. I think that is so high The support rate may be unprecedented but unattainable by those politicians in the United States. This is actually a vicious attack on individual politicians such as Pompeo The best and most powerful response from the Communist Party of China.”
