Scientists have discovered one of the darkest creatures on earth, so dark that they can only see one outline
According to a study published on Thursday, Eastern Time, at least 16 of the recently discovered deep-sea fish are one of the darkest creatures discovered to date.
This is one of the darkest creatures in the world
This study was published in”Contemporary Biology” and one of the study authors, Alexander Davis, said:”These Fish live anywhere from 200 meters to 2000 meters below the surface of the water. The color is very dark, and often only one outline can be seen. They look like creatures on the scene. They are really incredibly black.”
In Davis’s words, these fish are “matte black”.
In order to meet this super black standard, a species must reflect less than 0.5%of light. According to research, a recently discovered species of hornbill catfish has a reflectivity between 0.044%and 0.051%.
This blackness has exceeded the blackness of the ultra-black butterfly, which is almost equivalent to the ultra-black paradise bird. The feather reflectivity of this bird is between 0.05%and 0.31%.
By contrast, black paper can only reflect light that is not worse than 10%.
It’s not easy to catch this fish of the horned catfish, because this fish is too dark and often can’t even see the outline. As a last resort, Davis and his colleagues threw a large net 200-2000 meters below sea level and dragged them through the water to catch the fish.
The study found that the melanin of this fish plays a dual role of scattering light and absorbing light, which is very rare in super black creatures. At the same time, Davis also believes that this fish is only a small part of the ultra-black fish in the ocean.
Because—the possibility of catching this super black fish is really small.
