Overseas.com, July 2nd Venezuela’s National Election Commission announced on the 1st local time that the new parliamentary elections will be held on December 6.
According to the Russian Satellite News Agency, Indira Alfonzo Izaguirre, chairman of the Venezuelan National Election Commission, announced that the parliamentary elections will retain 87 constituencies used in the 2015 parliamentary elections, and the number of parliamentary seats will increase 66%, from the original 167 to 277. Alfonso said the decision was a”balanced” approach between the list vote and the nominal vote in the Venezuelan election system.
The Venezuelan Supreme Court appointed a new National Election Commission in June to conduct parliamentary election matters. In addition, in January of this year, President of Venezuela Maduro also suggested that UN Secretary General Guterres appoint an observer committee to participate in December Venezuelan parliamentary elections. Maduro said he hopes the international community will see how Venezuela rebuilds the National Assembly.
The last parliamentary election was held in December 2015. The opposition party won 112 out of 167 seats, and the conflict between the two parties continued. In May 2018, Maduro was re-elected in the presidential election, but was opposed by the opposition party headed by Guaido. The domestic political situation in Venezuela has also heated up.
