The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government: The procurement of vaccines is entirely based on scientific evidence. The rumor makers have deliberately tested it.

Xinhua News Agency, Hong Kong, December 14th. There are social media rumors that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government’s ordering of the new crown pneumonia vaccine is a political decision. To transfer benefits to the Mainland or individual companies, a spokesperson for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government solemnly pointed out on the 14th that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government’s procurement of vaccines is entirely based on existing scientific evidence and aims to ensure that the safest and most effective vaccines are provided to all Hong Kong citizens as soon as possible. The rumors are purely false and unpredictable.

According to the Information Service of the SAR Government, the SAR Government announced as early as September that it would adopt a “two-pronged” strategy to purchase new crown pneumonia vaccines for Hong Kong citizens. On the one hand, the SAR government participates in the global acquisition mechanism for the new crown pneumonia vaccine led by the World Health Organization. At the same time, it also directly signs pre-purchase agreements with individual vaccine manufacturers to obtain more vaccine supplies as soon as possible.

The three vaccines currently pre-purchased by the SAR government are developed/manufactured by Kexing Holdings (Hong Kong) Co., Ltd. (inactivated vaccines), Fosun Pharma/Germany Vaccines), and AstraZeneca/Oxford University (viral vector vaccines), belong to three different technology platforms, scientific research technology, development progress and clinical research are all at the forefront.

The spokesperson said that the SAR government’s procurement of relevant vaccines is based on the opinions of experts on candidate vaccines, as well as the supply of vaccines and time, logistics and storage methods. Vaccine procurement decisions are based solely on safety, effectiveness, quality and supply, and absolutely no political factors are involved.

The spokesperson pointed out that spreading false news or attempting to politicize public health issues will severely impact the unity of the community to fight the epidemic. The SAR government deeply regrets this. To strengthen public confidence in vaccines, the SAR government will continue to increase the transparency of information dissemination.
