Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, December 8th. On December 8, President Xi Jinping and Nepalese President Bhandari exchanged letters to jointly announce the elevation of Mount Everest.

Xi Jinping pointed out that last year, we reached a consensus on China and Nepal to jointly announce the latest elevation of Mount Everest. Over the past year or so, the teams of the two countries have overcome various difficulties and carried out solid work, and finally determined the snow elevation of Mount Everest based on the global elevation benchmark. Today, I would like to work with President Bhandari to formally announce to the world on behalf of China and Nigeria that the latest elevation of Mount Everest is 88.886 meters.

Xi Jinping pointed out that Mount Everest is an important symbol of the friendship between the two countries for generations. The two countries have established the world’s highest peak as the boundary peak between China and Nepal and the “China-Nepal Friendship Peak”. Today, I and you jointly announced that the latest elevation of Mount Everest has the significance of the times and fully reflects the high level of sustained development of China-Nepal relations. China is also willing to work with Nepal to actively promote cooperation in the protection of the ecological environment of Mount Everest and scientific research, and protect the precious wealth and homeland of the two peoples.

Xi Jinping emphasized that this year marks the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Nigeria. With the joint efforts of both sides, the political mutual trust between the two countries has been increasing day by day, the joint construction of the “Belt and Road” is progressing steadily, and the trans-Himalayan three-dimensional interconnection network is changing from a vision to a reality. China and Nepal should promote the continuous development of the generational friendly strategic cooperative partnership between the two countries oriented towards development and prosperity, and jointly build a closer community of shared future between China and Nepal and benefit the two countries and their peoples.

Bandari stated in the letter that Nepal and China have always been good neighbors, good friends, and good partners. Cooperation between the two countries in areas such as economic development, connectivity, and humanities is in the interests of both countries. Mount Everest is a long-lasting symbol of the traditional friendship between Nepal and China. I am very pleased to work with your Excellency to announce that the newest snow elevation of Mount Everest is 88.886 meters. Today the two sides jointly announced the latest elevation of Mount Everest, which is of historical significance. President Xi Jinping paid a state visit to Nepal last year, pushing China-Nepal relations and bilateral cooperation into a new era. The two governments will work to implement the consensus reached during the visit and jointly realize economic and social development and prosperity.
