Scientists demonstrate that a sensor solution based on insect ears can be used to control the movement of a car

By combining insects with robots or electronic systems, research teams have previously demonstrated semi-mechanical locusts that can be used to sniff explosive chemicals. A semi-mechanical cockroach that performs search and rescue missions, and a semi-mechanical dragonfly that can act as a highly maneuverable drone.

In this new study at Tel Aviv University, a team of scientists connected the ear of a deceased locust to a machine platform to replace the traditional microphone.

Through the “monaural” device to provide oxygen and nutrients, the research team maintains its biological functions so that the entire system can respond to environmental sounds.

The demonstration of this technology by Tel Aviv scientists opened a new door for the sensory integration scheme between machines and insects. Because some solutions built from the ground up are not efficient, new solutions can help scientists save a lot of development time and focus their efforts on more important projects.
