About 63 years ago, in 1958, Fudan University established the major of Semiconductor Physics, which became the predecessor of the School of Microelectronics. In the following decades, students from Fudan University and talents from other colleges and universities created the growth of China’s integrated circuit industry.

The story of Fudan University’s chip semiconductor construction can be traced back to the early days of the founding of New China. At that time, the domestic education industry was waiting to be flourished, and there were various problems such as incomplete discipline construction and shortage of teachers.
In 1951, 70 years ago, colleges and departments across the country learned from the Soviet model to adjust, the former Fudan University, Jiaotong University, Tongji University, Zhejiang University, Hujiang University, Datong University and other physics departments Students merged to form the new Physics Department of Fudan University.
In the same year, Xie Xide, who received a PhD in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was looking for ways to return to China from the United States and contribute to the construction of New China. In 1952, Xie Xide took a trip to England and was able to return to China to teach in the integrated physics department of Fudan University.
It is this returned overseas woman who embraces the ideal of serving the country and the first female university president of New China in the future. Together with colleagues and students, she completed the pioneering of the semiconductor discipline of Fudan University.

Since 1952, Xie Xide has taught six basic and professional courses such as solid-state physics and quantum mechanics in four years, and he has personally compiled textbooks and handouts.
In 1958, Xie Xide took the lead and founded the semiconductor physics major in Fudan University. In the same year, “Semiconductor Physics” co-written by Xie Xide and Peking University professor Huang Kun came out, providing standard textbooks and basic reference books for domestic semiconductor physics students and researchers. In the following years, Xie Xide also co-authored “Solid State Physics (Volume Two)” with Fang Junxin, a professor of Fudan Physics Department, and promoted the establishment of the Fudan Institute of Modern Physics. From 1983 to 1988, Xie Xide served as the president of Fudan University and was also the first female university president since the founding of New China.
Around Xie Xide, there are many faculty and researchers who work with him, who also contribute to the construction of the semiconductor discipline of Fudan University.

For example, during Xie Xide’s tenure as president, Fudan University professor Zhang Qianling was responsible for promoting the establishment of the State Key Laboratory of Application Specific Integrated Circuits and Systems. The laboratory was approved by the State Planning Commission in 1989, and officially passed the national acceptance in September 1995. It is still the only national key laboratory specializing in integrated circuit design and research in my country.
In 1956, Professor Lai Zuwu led the Electronics Laboratory of Fudan University and successfully trial-produced Fudan 601 electronic analog computer, which was also the first electronic analog computer reported in China.
Professor Lu Dong was commissioned by Xie Xide to co-write “Solid State Physics” with Professor Fang Junxin. When the second edition of “Solid State Physics” was revised in 2002, Professor Lu Dong spent a month to supplement the chapters on micro and nanotechnology, and accurately “scheduled” a major development direction in the world of solid state physics.
Under the cultivation of these outstanding teaching and research personnel, Fudan University has cultivated a group of outstanding students in the early stage of semiconductor discipline construction, and formed a benign feedback to the discipline construction.
For example, Bao Minhang and Jiang Ping joined Xie Xide’s theory group when they were undergraduates at Fudan University. After graduation, they passed Xie Xide’s postgraduates and eventually became professors of physics at Fudan University.

Based on the Department of Electronic Engineering rebuilt in 1982, the Department of Optics established in 1954, and the Department of Computer Science established in 1975, Fudan University established the School of Information Science and Engineering in 2000.
