According to reports, this document was signed on May 10. Duterte stated in the document, “In view of the outbreak of African swine fever, it is hereby declared that the Philippines has entered a state of disaster for a period of one year from now, unless the situation requires it to be lifted or extended in advance.”
Tert said that the announcement of the disaster status will enable the central and local governments to use their rapid response funds to curb African swine fever.
It is reported that African swine fever was first discovered in the Philippines in 2019, and it has now spread to 12 regions and 46 provinces of the country. Despite the measures taken by the government, new cases are still being reported.
African swine fever has reduced the Philippines’ production by about 3 million pigs and lost more than 100 billion pesos (approximately RMB 13.4 billion), which has also led to rising domestic pork prices.
