New cement-based battery technology can turn the entire building into a battery
The concept involves a cement-based mixture , A small amount of short carbon fiber is added to increase the conductivity and bending toughness of the material. A metal-coated carbon fiber mesh is also embedded in the cement mixture, in which iron is the anode and nickel is the cathode. In the past, other teams’ studies have investigated the feasibility of concrete batteries, but found that their performance was very low and gave up.
Chalmers researcher Think of a new method to produce electrodes, so that the average energy density of this cement-based battery is 7 watt-hours per square meter, which is about ten times better than the energy that the previous concrete battery can generate.
But the researchers pointed out that compared with commercial batteries, its energy density is still very low. Nevertheless, they believe that this limitation can be overcome because the battery will provide a huge volume when used in production buildings. The benefits of having a huge multi-storey building that is essentially a huge battery are obvious, including powering the lighting in the building, providing communication connections in remote areas, or any other power needs.
