According to reports, in order to solve the series of problems faced by electric vehicles in severe cold environments, Beijing Institute of Technology, Rongsheng Mengguli Power Technology Co., Ltd., Beijing Institute of Technology Huachuang Electric Vehicle Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Ligong Huachuang ), Beiqi Foton Motor Co., Ltd. and other project team members jointly developed an all-climate battery system. In the severe winter of 2018, in Hailar, Inner Mongolia, it was freezing cold and the electric car developed by Lin Cheng’s team was driving on snowy roads. After testing, after the vehicle is allowed to stand for 48 hours in a low temperature environment of -40°C, battery heating is started, and the battery system heats up by 4°C per minute, which consumes 5% of the total energy.

In the same period of 2019, Lin Cheng’s team continued to organize vehicle winter trials in Hailar. The battery system heats up by 7°C per minute, consumes 5% of the total energy, and reduces air conditioning heating energy consumption by 40%.

In early 2020, the team conducted another winter test. Up to now, the lithium-ion power battery system products developed by the project team led by BIT have successfully completed three extreme cold environment tests of all-climate power batteries in Hailar, and the self-heating rate index has reached the international leading level.

Lin Cheng pointed out: “This is a complete set of innovation system involving many core technologies. The team not only conducts research on the control strategy and theory of the heating system, such as the selection and optimization of heating elements, the development of heating loops, and the heating strategy. The research on the vehicle must also be combined with vehicle control. At present, the entire working principle verification of the all-climate power battery system has been completed, and the battery system product prototype has been successfully developed.”

The three types of vehicles have successfully passed the series of tests for low-temperature heating of all-climate power batteries, air-conditioning heating, defrosting, and climbing, acceleration, braking, and energy consumption under ice and snow conditions.

At the test site seminar, Academician Sun Fengchun said that the success of this extreme cold test marked the core of China’s new energy vehicles in all-climate power batteries, low-temperature enthalpy air-conditioning, and full-climate vehicle control. The key technology is at the world’s leading level, laying a solid technical foundation for new energy vehicles to break through the severe cold forbidden zone. In the future, new energy vehicles will not be afraid of ultra-low temperature and severe cold, and can maintain almost the same driving range as under normal temperature conditions.

Lin Cheng told reporters that small-batch production of all-climate new energy buses has been carried out and trial runs have been conducted in Yanqing and other areas in Beijing.
