In the era of raging wars, red radio waves broke through the enemy’s blockades and spread to all of China and the world. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the communications industry developed rapidly, providing people with information networks and services that were “usable, affordable, and well-used”. Especially since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, my country has built the world’s largest information and communication network. The development of 5G networks is leading, application innovations are emerging one after another, and the status of a network power is gradually established.

1 From “Half Radio” to “Information Superhighway”

After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the people’s communication needs have increased day by day. Under the leadership of the party, the communications industry has achieved leapfrog development, and modern communications technologies and businesses have “flyed into the homes of ordinary people.”

At the end of 1957, an international wireless communication network with Beijing, Shanghai, and Xinjiang radio stations as the backbone, and a domestic long-distance wired communication network with Beijing as the center were established across the country. In November 1987, Guangzhou took the lead in opening a cellular analog mobile phone system in the country, and opened up the country’s first A cellular analog mobile phone. The development of my country’s mobile communications set sail from this, and the information and communications industry opened a new chapter.

From the telegraph to the telephone, from the pager to the “big brother”, from the feature phone to the smart phone, the information communication tools used by people continue to “evolve”; from the integrated management of government and enterprise by the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications to China The three major operators of China Telecom, China Mobile and China Unicom are “three pillars”. The market competition in my country’s communications industry continues to increase, operating efficiency continues to improve, service quality continues to improve, and tariffs continue to decrease. The “information highway” extends in all directions.

At the same time, my country’s Internet industry and technology are developing rapidly. The 47th “Statistical Report on China’s Internet Development Status” released by the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) shows that as of December 2020, the number of Internet users in my country has reached 989 million, and the Internet penetration rate has reached 70.4%. With the Internet within reach, new business formats emerge one after another, and the channels for people to obtain information have become more diverse.

Liu Liehong, deputy minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said that at present, the number of 4G base stations in my country accounts for more than half of the global total. my country’s 5G network development is leading the way. As of the end of March 2021, my country has built 819,000 5G base stations, accounting for more than 70% of the world, and has built the world’s largest 5G independent networking network.

While the “information highway” is rapidly spreading and the “big network” of information is constantly being woven, the speed increase and fee reduction have also taken greater steps, benefiting thousands of households. According to data from international speed testing agencies, my country’s fixed broadband speed ranks 18th among 176 countries and regions in the world, and mobile network speed ranks 4th among 139 countries and regions in the world. According to the monitoring of the Global Association for Mobile Communication Systems, the average monthly expenditure of mobile communication users in my country is US$5.94, which is lower than the global average of US$11.36.

Convenient and efficient information network has brought more convenience to people’s lives. In 2020, in the face of the sudden new crown pneumonia epidemic, the national integrated government service platform launched the “epidemic prevention health code”, which has applied for nearly 900 million people and used more than 40 billion people; major online education platforms have launched various types of students for student groups. 3 5G technology, industry, and applications enter the “no man’s land”
