And this dreamy figure is based on the premise that the phantom star is mainly made of metal, but Now we may need to reassess the value of this asteroid. A new study led by researchers at the University of Arizona suggests that Phantom may not be as metallic and dense as previous estimates.
NASA stated that Void Star appears to be an exposed nickel-iron core from an early planet, which is part of our solar system. Previous analysis of this asteroid has led to an estimate that its metal content may be as high as 95%. A new paper recently published in the “Planetary Science” magazine believes that this number is 82.5% of metal, and the density is much lower than expected.
The lead author David Cantillo said: “It would be very unexpected for the Void Star to be a pile of rubble. Although its metal content is high, our data shows that the density is lower than expected.”
The research team adopted an unusual practical method to estimate the composition of the asteroid. The team “by mixing different materials and analyzing light patterns in the laboratory, re-created the regolith of Void Star-loose rock surface material-until they matched the telescope observations of the asteroid.” These results indicate Psyche may have experienced collisions with other asteroids and then left a layer of sediment on its surface.
The good news is that we can expect some reliable answers to the questions surrounding Psyche. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is sending a mission to visit it. SpaceX signed an agreement to launch the Psyche spacecraft, with the goal of taking off in July 2022.
