Beijing water buttercup, walnut tree, red lilac…The Yanqing competition area of the Beijing Winter Olympics is covered with dozens of planting quilts and flowers from the foot to the top of the mountain. Among them, Beijing water buttercup is a plant endemic to Beijing, which is an endangered species. The top of Xiaohaituo Mountain, 2,198 meters above sea level, will become the starting platform of the National Alpine Ski Center.

On June 23, the reporter visited the ecological restoration situation in Yanqing competition area. According to the Beijing Major Projects Office, the ecological restoration of the Yanqing competition area of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics will be fully completed by the end of this month, and the next step will enter the stage of beautification and refinement. This is also the project with the longest construction period of the Beijing Winter Olympics. In the past 6 years, they have completed a total of 2.14 million square meters of ecological restoration. The difficulty of ecological restoration is no less than that of newly-built venues

Starting from the urban area, drive along the Jingli Expressway all the way to the northwest. After exiting the Haituo toll station, Looking up along the hillside, you can see the completed Winter Olympics Yanqing competition area. In the future, competitions such as alpine skiing and snowmobile sledging will be held here.

With the completion of the stadiums and related supporting facilities, a six-year ecological restoration project in the Haituo Valley is coming to an end. Today, seven snow trails covered with green vegetation pour down from the top of the mountain, blending with the surrounding forests and grasses; the Yanqing Winter Olympic Village and the Mountain News Center are backed by the green hills, dotted with wild flowers on the green carpet of the hillside.

Highlight the “green Olympics”, combine the construction of Olympic venues with the promotion of ecological civilization, and strive to make sports venues and municipal supporting facilities harmoniously blend with the natural landscape of Xiaohaituo Mountain…Beijing Major Project Office Deputy Director Yu Dequan told reporters that these are important principles for the construction of venues in the Yanqing competition area.

The construction conditions of the Yanqing competition area are difficult, and the ecological restoration work is as difficult as the new stadium project. This work started in 2015 and has lasted for 6 years, making it the longest construction period for the Beijing Winter Olympics.

According to the information disclosed by the Municipal Major Office, the Yanqing competition area takes seven snow tracks and the slopes around the municipal roads as the main repair area, with a total repair area of 2.14 million square meters. According to the plan, the ecological restoration work will be fully completed by the end of this month.

Before the start of construction, we should first customize the “protection plan” for animals and plants.

There is a principle for ecological restoration. Native or local native plants should be used to ensure the stability of local ecological resources. In order to protect the natural ecology of Mount Haituo, in 2016, before moving the “first shovel soil”, relevant forestry, water, soil, and ecological experts carried out an “ecological environment background survey” in advance. This is to determine whether the Yanqing Winter Olympics can achieve an ecological environment. The key to repair. Professor Zhang Zhixiang of Beijing Forestry University is one of them.

In Zhang Zhixiang’s view, the ecological environment background investigation is extremely important and forward-looking work. Based on the collected data, they have formulated a detailed protection plan to guide the construction party in scientific construction.

Before the construction of the project started, the construction unit carried out a “customized” protection plan for the disturbed plants in the competition area. Plants with good ecological environment and small disturbances from construction are protected in situ to make them an important part of the building; for the trees that cannot be avoided during the construction process, the builders have formulated a detailed “Immigration Plan”.

For the animals in the competition area, they combined with the natural space formed by construction to carry out animal passage construction and habitat reconstruction. In the design, the characteristics of animal activities are fully considered, culverts are used as animal passages, and construction waste rocks and wetlands are used to reconstruct reptile habitats.

Take a cable car from the tourist distribution center halfway up the mountain. When it approaches 2000 meters above sea level, the plants on the ground are gradually replaced from bushes by lower grass.

“The top of Xiaohaituo Mountain is 2198 meters above sea level. What we see now belongs to the vegetation of subalpine meadow. It can solidify water and soil to the greatest extent, but once it is destroyed, recovery is extremely difficult.” Zhang Zhixiang told reporter.

In order to protect the meadow ecosystem, the meadow disturbed by the construction was removed as a whole, and then returned after the construction work was completed, which can be said to be a “relocation in place”.
