In April this year, China National Space Administration released the first batch of 44 lunar samples totaling 56.8812g, and began accepting loan applications. 37 users from 23 scientific research institutions including the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Nuclear Industry Corporation, and the Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation submitted 85 applications.
All members of the first lunar sample expert committee formed an evaluation committee to conduct a centralized evaluation of the loan application, and 37 people conducted on-site defenses. After review, 31 applications from 13 scientific research institutions were approved, corresponding to 21 samples, totaling 17.4764g, of which 6 were 157.6mg for light sheet samples and 868.8mg for 13 cuttings samples. The number of sample applications that passed the review accounted for 36.5% of all applications, and the weight of samples accounted for 37.8% of all published samples.
From China University of Geosciences (Beijing), China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), University of Science and Technology of China, Sun Yat-Sen University, Institute of Geology, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences , Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, National Center for Space Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Purple Mountain Observatory, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing Geological Research Institute of Nuclear Industry, 5th Academy of Aerospace Science and Technology Group, and other scientific research institutions have obtained the first batch of sample research qualifications.
Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences Zhu Rixiang, director of the Lunar Sample Expert Committee, said that the evaluation criteria are first to evaluate whether the scientific problem that the applicant intends to study is of important scientific significance, and secondly, the expert group shall evaluate whether the applicant’s research plan is feasible and whether it has relevant research capabilities. When voting at the meeting, more than 2/3 of the experts participating in the meeting need to agree.
The reporter was informed that some samples are subject to fierce competition, while some samples are not in demand, and some samples have been applied for but have not been sent out. According to Zhu Rixiang, there are two main reasons. First, it depends on the applicant’s consideration of the sample research value and application strategy; second, the committee members have strictly checked the scientific significance, program feasibility, and impact on other studies, and did not support the unclear explanation of scientific issues and the research program. Incomplete application.
Chang’e-5 takes samples from both table and drill methods. This time, all samples are taken from table. According to reports, the processing of the samples taken from the table has been basically completed, and the processing, preparation and basic analysis of the samples taken from the drill are still in progress. The number of drill samples is large, and the sample size is very small. Many samples are less than 1 gram. The workload of sample processing, description, and information collection is very large. Sample preparation and basic analysis also need to be more delicate and careful.
Subsequently, the samples collected by Chang’e-5 will be released one after another. The next application review for the loan of lunar scientific research samples is expected to be scheduled in September this year.
Introduced by the National Space Administration, it is planning to organize some lunar samples into Shaoshan, Hunan, the hometown of Chairman Mao, for remote disaster preparedness, in order to comfort Chairman Mao’s long-cherished wish that he can go to the moon in nine days.
