NOIRLab releases the latest photos of Centaurus A, one of the closest galaxies to Earth

The National Optical Infrared Astronomy Research Laboratory (NOIRLab) of the National Science Foundation stated in a statement on Tuesday that Centaur A is “off the earth “One of the nearest giant galaxies” is also “one of the best studied celestial bodies in the night sky of the Southern Hemisphere.”

Centaurus A’s unique appearance is partly due to a dramatic merger in the past, when a huge elliptical galaxy collided with a smaller spiral galaxy. Galaxies are busy places for star formation. If you track the “black dust tendrils” in the foreground of the image, you will find some small blue stars gathered at the end.

This gorgeous photo was taken by a dark energy camera mounted on the Víctor M. Blanco 4-meter telescope. A NOIRLab video can give you a deeper understanding of the image in the tune of space music, or you can download a huge full-size version of the image.

If you are in the southern hemisphere, you can take out binoculars or small telescopes to look for Centaur A. If you are elsewhere, enjoy this magnificent telescope portrait.
