Orion’s heat shield protects astronauts in spacecraft and capsules from the intense heat generated when re entering the earth’s atmosphere. When the spacecraft re enters the atmosphere at a speed of about 25000 miles per hour, the heat shield will experience an extreme temperature of about 5000 degrees Fahrenheit, or about half that of the sun. The heat shield has an underlying titanium alloy skeleton covered by carbon fiber skin. More than 180 unique blocks are bonded to the skin of the heat shield and will slowly burn off when the spacecraft re enters the earth’s atmosphere

the recently delivered heat shield leather will be heat and pressure treated at Lockheed Martin’s plant in Sunnyvale, California. The skin of the heat shield is composed of many layers of carbon fibers, which are activated by a resin. Once cured, the resin will first soften and then harden to consolidate the shell. Heat treatment and pressure treatment will provide the housing with the necessary mechanical strength characteristics required by Orion thermal protection system

unlike other aircraft, “Super Guppy” aircraft has a specially designed hinged nose that can be opened to an angle of 110 degrees, so that goods can be loaded and unloaded from its belly. The unique shape of the aircraft also enables it to carry heavy or heavy hardware, otherwise traditional aircraft cannot accommodate it. Orion heat shield and its corresponding skin are 16.5 feet in diameter. It is the largest heat shield base developed so far for manned space missions

Ames is responsible for supervising the development, analysis and arc jet test of the entry system and spacecraft of NASA Artemis lunar mission. Through Artemis, NASA will land the first woman and the first colored man on the lunar surface, conduct extensive operations on and around the moon, and prepare for the first human mission to Mars
