senior author of this paper, from the University of Birmingham geography Dr Sebastian watt of the school of earth and Environmental Sciences said: “This type of volcanic disaster is rare, extremely difficult to predict, and often destructive. Our results show that although there was a violent explosive eruption after the collapse of krakato volcano, it was caused by the pressure released by landslides on the magmatic system – just like the bursting of a champagne bottle stopper.”
