According to the latest data from the Greek Ministry of health, Greece has distributed about 108 million self-test boxes to about 7.8 million people. The boxes usually contain a swab, an extraction tube containing buffer solution and other plastic packages such as disinfection paper towel bags.
Strobra, a doctor at Athens National University of technology, explained that the substance contained in the buffer solution is called ethoxylated octyl / alkenylphenol, which is listed as a “substance of high concern”, that is, it is very noteworthy in terms of toxicity. According to the Greek regulation on the registration, evaluation, licensing and restriction of chemicals, the substance can only be used as a medical product for in vitro diagnosis under controlled conditions.
She said that the self-test box will certainly have a negative impact on the environment. In addition, the waste of masks, protective gloves, disinfectant bottles and other products is huge and thrown everywhere.
‘we should make the necessary measurements to study whether the waste is toxic or contaminated and the degree of pollution, but it takes time and information, and all authorities should take immediate action,’ she said.
Strobra also said that in Greece, there is a lack of information on waste recycling.
