The FengYun-3 e satellite, known as the “Li star”, was successfully launched on July 5, 2021. It is the world’s first civil dawn dusk orbit operational satellite, carrying 11 payloads, including 3 newly developed instruments, and filling the gap in satellite data observation of the global numerical weather prediction model during the dawn dusk period. Fy-4b was successfully launched on June 3, 2021. It is the first operational satellite of China’s new generation geostationary orbit meteorological satellite. On the basis of inheriting the mature technology of fy-4b-a test satellite, it carries out optimization design, fully exploits the satellite platform and payload capacity, improves the overall reliability, stability and detection accuracy of the satellite, and adds a fast imager, which has the regional imaging capability of minute level 250 meter resolution.

FY-3 e, FY-4 B and their ground application systems have been put into business trial operation on June 1 this year. After the operational operation, the FY-3 e satellite, FY-3 C satellite and FY-3 D Satellite realize the three-star networking, and provide a complete global coverage of observation data for the numerical prediction model every 6 hours, effectively improving the accuracy and timeliness of global numerical weather prediction, which is of great significance to improving the global earth observation system; The FY-4 B satellite and FY-4 a satellite have realized dual satellite networking, further meeting the service needs of China and countries and regions along the “the Belt and Road” for meteorological monitoring and forecasting, emergency disaster prevention and mitigation.

During the in orbit test, FengYun-3 e satellite successively released three batches of observation products, such as “Li Xing looks at the sun”, “Li Xing looks at the atmosphere” and “Li Xing looks at the earth”, which played an important role in the “La Nina” event, the melting of polar glaciers, the solar eruption and typhoon monitoring; Fengyun-4b satellite used high spatial-temporal resolution images, snow and other quantitative products to provide support and guarantee for the meteorological services for the Winter Olympics, and played a role in the service guarantee for major activities such as the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, the 14th National Games and the monitoring of international hot events such as Tonga volcanic eruption.

Up to now, China has successfully launched two generations of 4-type 19 FY meteorological satellites, of which 7 are in orbit. As an important part of the WMO global operational application meteorological satellite sequence and the duty satellite of the international charter mechanism for major disasters, China is continuously providing data products and services to 124 countries and regions around the world.

In the future, the China Meteorological Administration will continue to promote the Fengyun meteorological satellite to contribute to WMO and its members’ work of disaster prevention and mitigation and climate change response.
