NASA’s initial plan to bring Martian rock samples back to earth relied on ESA sampling vehicles. These space agencies actually share a possible Rover concept that will arrive on Mars and send samples to the rocket. The rocket then sends samples to the earth re-entry orbiter.

From there, rock samples will be sent back to earth. However, the New York Times pointed out that the design of the rover has become too large to mount a lander with the rocket. Instead, NASA will have to use two landers.

The cost of sending the sampling vehicle to Mars to collect Martian rock samples will be higher, because NASA will have to build a second lander for the sampling vehicle. Instead, NASA and ESA plan to send samples directly to the lander using perseverance. The 30 rock samples will then be loaded into rockets and sent into orbit.

The sample return plan is expected to reach Mars sometime in 2030. However, according to the performance of curiosity, NASA believes that perseverance will survive in the next eight years. And if it doesn’t, NASA has designed a clever backup plan to send Martian rock samples to the rocket.

If perseverance encounters any problems before 2030, NASA and ESA will use helicopters to transfer samples. NASA’s Mars “wit” helicopter has continued to break its own record. However, the helicopter is currently on vacation.

And because of the success of helicopters, NASA believes that helicopters can provide some additional uses in the future. So far, the smart has made 29 flights on the surface of Mars. Helicopters should be more capable of transporting Mars rock samples from the perseverance to the returning lander.

Of course, people are still worried that Martian rocks may bring unknown biological particles to earth. But NASA said it was taking preventive measures to prevent any problems in this regard. Since such a task will take at least eight years, it gives them more time to prepare.
